The most effective trick I have found is teaching your dog to walk beside you using the "heel" command combined with immediate feedback. This means the moment your dog starts to pull, you stop walking or turn and walk in a different direction, giving the dog zero attention. You only move forward again when the leash is slack, rewarding the dog for calming down with a pet or a treat and encouraging your dog to stay close.
